Nocturnal Animist

Gaps in the clouds, these canyons of the sky,
Deepened profoundly in the cool night air,
Syrens among the shoals, call to the eye,
Seductively unveil a country where,
Unknown by day, exotic creatures crowd.
Half animal itself, this countryside
Shifts, as a herd before a drover's prod
Evolves into its future space, a mood
That shapes the landscape, as in a dream.
True, it is only wind, a breath of air,
That moves these forms, and those within the mind,
Always with us, but seldom tended to,
Always with us, but often reticent.
Only at night, the animals call out.
